Creation of hero’s suits

Hi everyone!

Here I'd like to show you how I made the main game character for Space Roguelike Adventure. This is a pixel art side scroller platformer game with generated levels on different fictional planets.

To know what to do next, we decided to take the base platform size 16x16px and Aseprite to draw.

The game assumes the presence of a store where the hero can choose suits and weapons. That's why I drew them separately. My task was to design and create 11 skins with animations:

  • idle - 4 frames;
  • run - 6 frames;
  • jump - 1 frame;
  • fall - 1 frame;
  • attack - 3 frames.

The best advice for any newbie to drawing is to find good reference pictures. That's where I started. I decided that I would draw inspiration from the pop culture of games and films.  And the next my step was to make some pixels look like my references.

1. Home cosy hoodie - this is the starting skin from what the game starts. And since the UFO  is kidnapped the player from the house on the Earth (part of the plot), the player is an ordinary guy in an ordinary gray hoodie.

2. Emo boy 2000 - the first opened item in the shop. A movement that knows a lot about death. The emo was especially popular in the 2000s. So why not?!

3. Immigrant - one of my favorite anime Ergo Proxy. This is the robe of Vincent - the immigrant from the city of Mosk on a post-apocalyptic Earth. No more spoilers.

4. Taxi driver from 2263 - this is Korben Dallas from The Fifth Element, not Duke Nukem =) The cool taxi driver who once saved the whole world.

5. Robe from Matooine -  my favorite character from the Star Wars. I think without him the game would not have been =)

6. Shaolin Monk - Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat. Strong, cool, intergalactic fighter. That's what I need.

7. Mad Min - Mad Max, Min Max. A play on words that will probably infuriate him.

8. KR888 - Connor from Detroit: Become Human. The best android for killing bad boys.

9. SpaceY suit - this is a SpaceX suit. Finally, a new suit from earthlings. Why not sell it in our space store?

10.  Engineer's suit - Isaac Clarke from Dead Space. The man who knows a lot about reliable suits.

11. Predator's suit - a game about space, life on other planets and without Predator?! Never! The last suit in the shop.

I love the freedom of indie development, because we don't have too many restrictions. And we are mainly limited by our outlook and imagination. And of course copyright =)) Therefore, I wish you inspiration, to be bold to experiment, because you can afford it.

If you liked the article let me know here or in twitter. Maybe I could write something more. And if you interested in the game, please, add it in your wishlist! Or you can support us here
